Culture and Politics - A Second Battle of Tours

"Divorce as accepted as a part of life in Islamic culture. A man could divorce his wife by saying three times, ‘I divorce you.’ But he can choose to marry her again. However, if he also says, ‘You are like my mother to me,’ then this is a permanent divorce and he cannot marry her again unless she marries another man and is divorced from him. After that second divorce occurs, the first husband is free to marry her again if he wants" (Mark Gabriel, Jesus and Muhammad, p. 174).

Uh, wow. That's strange.

Am I misreading between the lines, or did I just read a description of how a Muslim man can have sex with his mother?

Chris- Yeah, that creeped me out as well.

"I divorce you... you are like my mother to me."
Is anyone else picking up the undertone here that the Islamic mother is not too well respected and honored? Every boy seems to go through a "I hate my mother because she's a girl and still gets to tell me what to do" phase when they are 10-14 but maybe it is far graver and more permanent in Muslim culture?

In fairness, it could be intended to mean just the opposite: "I no longer wish to be married to you, and will not relate to you in ways in which I would not relate to my mother, but I will continue to honor you as I do my mother." Of course the ideal and the practice are rather different, but since when is that a new thing in human nature among the adherents of ANY religion?
