When a nation offends God, the Bible teaches that He marches through the land in indignation. Blessings and disasters are a function of providence, and not a function of a random event dispenser in the sky. And the response to any and every event is always to be the same—repentance and faith.

Now repentance and faith are not just dispositions of the soul (although they begin there), but are also dispositions to act. But what are we to do? What tool should we pick up?

The Supreme Court decision this last week was a calamity for the biblical concept of limited government. This is not a partisan statement, or a pronouncement on politics from a preacher who is out of his depth. It was a calamity—and what we are called to is, always, repentance and faith. But what shall we do?

I would like to mention two things that you can do. What you do should include, but certainly not be limited to, these things. The first is more immediate. I would like to ask you to take special care in preparing your hearts and minds for the message next Lord’s Day, which will outline why this is such a calamity, and what the response should be.

The second thing we do is cultivate our presence in this community in the work God has given us to do. Stay at your post. Evangelize. Attend your Bible studies. Love your family. Teach your children. Go to the Canon website and look at the Bloomington videos there, which will illustrate the problem our nation has like little else will do. Participate in the ministries and campaigns that we decide upon together—including particularly the Grace Agenda conference in the fall. Volunteer. Register.

And of course, lest our resistance becomes vain and proud, we should always remember to confess our sins.
