Deep Theology, Man

First, read this. After  you have done so, then you may read what follows.

The two cash quotes are these:

“Note that “faithfulness to Scriptures” involves politics, the arts and sciences, and movies. Note as well that Leithart himself has defended the political theology of Constantine precisely because it is a worthy alternative to secularity. So what makes Muslims different aside from a different sacred text?”

And then later . . .

“Don’t lots of neo-Calvinists also say this about Christianity? Substitute God for Allah and you have a fairly close resemblance . . .”

Let me see. I would probably begin my discussion of this with the observation that the most important difference  that we might be talking about is that one is the true God and the other is a false one. One made the world, and the other one wasn’t even there. One became a man and died on the cross, the other one didn’t. One is right and the other is wrong. Right? Wrong? These are curious words. Tell me more about this Christian faith of yours.

If you give Aslan some talons and a beak, and if you give Tash golden fur and a rich mane, the whole thing starts to get more than a little confusing. I confess myself a little bit confused here, but not because it is complicated. I am confused over how something so simple got this complicated.

Consider this passage of Scripture:

“Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Matt. 4:8-10).

Now read through this carefully please. You see, if you substituted Jesus for the devil, and the devil for Jesus, why on earth should this temptation be resisted? Indeed, why would it be considered a temptation at all? Structurally, God demands worship and so does the devil. How can we possibly sort this out? This is deep theology, man.

I know. Let’s worship the bitch goddess of neutrality. That fixes everything. I think.
