Culture and Politics - Obama Nation Building

I can't let the Israel imbroglio, caused by Obama's 1967 comments, pass without making just a quick comment. The situation between Israel and the Palestinians is intractable, meaning by this that there is no political solution. Apart from a supernatural intervention that topples all the idols, the inevitable consequence will be war. The more people labor for peace apart from real repentance, the worse things will get.

I say these things as one who thinks back-in-the-day Zionism was one of the worst ideas ever. This intractable situation came from somewhere, and let us not forget that. But Israel is with us now, and so let us also never forget that God takes us from where we are and not from where we should have been.

For Christians, the biggest unnamed idol in this is the West's idolatry of democracy and self-determination. What would happen if the West Bank is made its own state? With, of course, all sorts of conditions placed on it? I'll tell you what would happen -- two elections later, Hamas would be governing that new state, and the agreed-upon conditions would all be out the window. Well, idealists might say, if that happened, we could just step back in and make them stop it. Right. Like we are doing right now in Gaza?

In short, the West Bank needs to be its own state, and it cannot be a democracy. Solve that one, ye solons of the earth.

I have been watching fox news and think that they way the news reporters talk about Israel has been onesided. I think if they are both fighting and one is on the defensive(Israel) they both are violent!

There are two idols at work. The second is premillenial eschatology

very helpful to think about.

As someone who is from Palestinian descent, reading this post made me think of when I was in Jordan at the border of Israel, Jordan, and Syria.

Years later my thoughts from that day were only Jesus can bring peace in that place.

Israel is doomed. They are surrounded by people who would either like to blow them up or immigrate en masse. Jewish Israeli birthrates are rather low and Arab birthrates are rather high. The United States' decline is no good for Israel either. Bottom line is they'd better quit playing around and start making friends.

Usama,

Indeed!

Gig Harbor program helps 3 groups learn not to hate

They were brought up to distrust each other, some living in close proximity but rarely crossing paths. A week in the Pacific Northwest, however, has turned a group of supposed enemies into friends.

Through a faith-based program called Sound & Sand Encounter, 27 young adults from Israel, Palestine and the United States have come together to share personal tales and learn from one another.

The two-week conference is sponsored by Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church and Musalaha, a nonprofit organization that promotes reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians through a shared love of Jesus.

I second Mr. Seward's observation re. the idol of premillennial (dispensationalist) eschatology.

A poster at WorldMagBlog today suggested that the Joplin MO tornado was God forsaking the US in response to Obama forsaking Israel.

And I once heard an Evangelical Christian caller tell radio host Dennis Prager that she wished she was Jewish like him!

In light of Romans 11, I find it more than a bit troubling that (American Evangelical dispensationalist) Christians are jealous of Jews.
