"If the devil is put into a rage now more than before, it is a sign that he is more opposed than he was before. he possessed all in quiet before, but now his kingdom begins to shake" (Burroughs, Irenicum, pp. 328-329).

This is a curious comment. I suppose it's true, but only useful if we can really discern that "the devil is put into a rage now more then before."
What if men are raging and causing their own strife? Shall the producers of their strife the point to that strife and say: "See, the devil's raging more than before. He's being opposed by us and therefore raging." Who is really the troubler in Israel?
