"This part of town had their crazy pastors too, but they mainly operated out of storefronts with names like Knee Deep in Glory Gospel Center. And some of their pastors had tattoos, but these were tattoos that said, 'I was in the Navy once, before I met Jesus,' instead of the uptown ecclesiastical version that said, 'I am desperate to accessorize my iPad'" (Evangellyfish, pp. 150-151). |

"That truly pious men shall carry their religion into politics, shall keep religious principle uppermost in all political questions which have a moral character, is an unquestionable and solemn duty" (Broadus, Preparation and Delivery, p. 100). |

This Table is set for you as a means of grace. God intends to strengthen you, not only in terms of your endurance, but also in your wits. The serpent, it says, was craftier than all the other creatures. And the Lord Jesus teaches us to keep our innocence, but to grow in our wisdom. Be wise as serpents, He says. This Table is here to help equip you in growing up into that wisdom.
Know that Satan often tempts you to one sin in order to tempt you to another. He is the master of misdirection. He tempts you to sin against the law at some point, and if you fall for it, so much the better. But the real game is to get you to sin against the gospel.

The judgments of God are slow in coming, but sudden when they come. We have a tendency, once any state of affairs has continued past three weeks, to consider it our lot in life or our birthright, depending on whether it is hard or easy. This is why we are always surprised—whether the surprise is a deliverance or a judgment. We think that the way it has been is the way it will be, and we frequently have a real failure of imagination at this point.

"A preacher of the gospel has certainly no business preaching morality apart from the gospel . . . He must first call men, as an ambassador for Christ, to be reconciled to God, must insist upon the indispensible need of regeneration through the Holy Spirit. Then, speaking to those who are looked upon as regenerate, he must, with all his might, urge them to true and high morality, not only on all other grounds, but as a solemn duty to God their Saviour" (Broadus, Preparation and Delivery, p. 98). |
