I posted last night on the Petraeus marvel, which got bumped down the page. If you missed it, you can catch up with it here.

Keep in mind that we are not speculating about a possible cover-up from a standing start. Remember that for those who have been following the story, there has been a massive cover-up in process already. This is just the final cherry on top of a bushel basket already full and overflowing.

Incidentally, the fact that it now involves sex makes it much more likely that the attention of the American public will not wander off as is our wont . . . like some Ritalin kid in an inner city school or something. Understanding the previous Benghazi scandal called for an attention span of more than fifteen minutes of thought, and a modicum of respect for Fox News and/or Glenn Beck. But since we are now officially in a Brad Thor potboiler, and this is a genre that Americans think they understand, quite a few extra folks are out in the lobby getting their popcorn now.

So think about it for a moment. Here are the basic options.

1. The timing of the resignation was a coincidence. It came out when it came out, and we are confronted with an optical illusion. Cool your baby jets.

2. It came out because blackmailers with the administration released the dirt on him because he wasn't playing ball with their official cover-up account, and so they busted him. This makes no sense because they could only steer him with threats of exposure, not with actual exposure. Now that it is out, what does he have to lose by telling everything?

3. It came out because blackmailers who were enemies of the administration threatened him with exposure because it looked as though he was going to play ball with the administration's cover-up. This would make tactical sense, but the problem here is that Petraeus had already made things difficult for the official account.

4. It came out because blackmailers with the administration tried to control his testimony by playing this card in private, and so Petraeus countered them by deciding to bust himself.

So, then, we sure don't know. But we do know enough to go get some popcorn.

I'm tremendously saddened by
Gen. Petraeus. Honor and
duty are sacrificed so easily
for so little by so many.

My Army ROTC son had just posted
a list of the general's life
maxims to his unit's web site.
My son had to pull that list
down in disgust.

Sometimes I think that there
is no more sure way to personal
disaster than to be in leadership.
Maybe a good maxim would be

Never be *the* guy,
just be *a* guy.

Option 2a: He had committed multiple blackmailable offenses, of which adultery was the least. Blackmailers with the administration released some of the information as a show of power, and now he has to play ball or face much worse information coming out in the course of the investigation.

Option 5: He wasn't going to play ball with the official cover-up and so blackmailers with the administration gave him a choice between resigning in disgrace or having an unexpected "heart attack" in the near future.

Option 5a: He wasn't going to play ball with the official cover-up and so blackmailers with the administration gave him a choice between resigning in disgrace or some member of his family having unexpected health or career difficulties.

Melissa, good extra options.

And here's the "I told you so." Petraeus is still testifying:

Option 6: Gen. and the Administration concocted this plan together because his testimony would have been damning but neither he or the administration was willing to risk him lying.

Option-7: Conservatives need something to speculate about and there hasn't been enough time to concoct a sensible election conspiracy.

I was going to comment on how reasonable Doug's options were, but then I read the comments and just had to shake my head. Options #1 and #7 look the most likely. #3 and #4 are within the realm of possibility in a "worst-case scenarios" kind of way. #6 doesn't make sense because Petraeus can still testify, and #2 doesn't make sense for that reason as well as what Doug already said. The rest of the options are somewhere between silliness and offensive.

With several of our "children" in the military and in the war zones, and several of my former students now active duty, I know how heavy the hearts of our brave soldiers are right now. They can't come out and say it, but the message is clear. They know their CIC is lying to the American people and they cannot do anything about it. The Patreus affair is just another body blow. My son once told me, "Mom, if Christians abandon the military, it will be a bad time for Christians everwhere. We're needed here and being called to serve Christ here for such a time as this." Please don't forget to pray for them. My son and son-in-law are discipling several young Christians and sharing Christ daily with others. And thank you Pastor Wilson for continuing to speak truth. May we be as courageous and wise to do the same wherever we live.

Here's the most complete story I've heard so far.

If it's true, then James Clapper played a major role in convincing Petraeus to resign. That's an unlikely guy to take part in a "liberal" coverup. Clapper is a highly respected veteran in intelligence (unanimous confirmation vote) who was a George W. Bush appointee before he was an Obama appointee.

Not sure if this belongs here or the previous conspiracy post.
