Like Being Waterboarded

Sharing Options

When we come to this Table, we are often mindful of our own weakness. This is good. We are weak, and we know that we must be made strong. One of the of things God does for us to make us strong is that He feeds us.

But God does not just feed us, He also exercises us. He puts us into situations where we must act on the basis of the strength we have been given—even if we feel as though it is not very much.

This is why God gives us troubles, to grow us in our strength. He does not overtax us, but He does tax us. On top of that, we often feel as though we have been overtax. But God knows our frame, and He knows how to test and grow us in a way that does not truly overwhelm. It is like being waterboarded—you are not drowning, but you can feel like it.

And in His providence, because this is how He tells stories, it is often the case that the strong fall, while the weak stand. This is why all of us, strong and weak, must confess our weakness and come to Him. This is why all of us, in Christ, are strong and able to stand.

So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
